According to State authorities, an International Driver Permit (IDP), is essentially an English translation of a foreign language drivers license issued by a foreign country. These permits can only be obtained in the country that issued the actual license. An IDP or IDL in itself is not considered a valid license. It must accompany a valid foreign license. The reason to have an IDP is to insure that your foreign language license will be comprehensible and acceptable to all officials who request to see it. The DMV may not accept a foreign language license unless it is accompanied by an IDP. The only two companies that are authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an International Driving Permit are AAA and AATA. International Driving Permits may be provided to any resident in the United States who is 18 years or over and holds a valid U.S. state driving license. We urge caution. This package allegedly enables the buyer to create a new identity and re-apply for a State issued DMV license free of past citations, suspensions or revocations. If the plan was successfully completed, the fine and penalties imposed for creating or falsifying your identification is much worse than coping with your present DMV record.
