Comments and Analysis

According to the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (“BLS”), personal trainers are often required to be certified to begin working with clients personally, in a gym, or other type of health club. Group fitness instructors may be allowed to begin without certification, but employers often encourage or require them to become certified. Most trainers/instructors need certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before applying for certification in physical fitness.

Various organizations offer certification. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (“NCCA”) lists certifying organizations that are accredited. All certifications include a written exam (some also have a practical part) that measures the individual’s knowledge of human physiology, understanding of proper exercise techniques, assessment of clients' fitness levels, and development of appropriate exercise programs.

Advanced certification requires an associate’s or bachelor's degree in an exercise-related subject that presents more specialized instruction, such as training athletes, working with people who are injured or ill, or advising clients on general health.

When looking for a certified personal or fitness trainer keep the following in mind: Verify any certification the individual claims to possess and research the accrediting organization that provides the certification. These organizations should be well known in the fitness industry. If you are looking to become a certified personal trainer, contact the NCCA for information on accredited organizations by visiting their website, or visit the BLS’s website.
