The Federal Trade Commission's Mail Order Rule protects consumers who shop by mail. According to this regulation, the company must ship your order when promised. If the company doesn't specify a shipping time, it must send the merchandise within 30 days. If there will be a delay, the company must give you the option to either agree to the delay or cancel the order.

If you decide to cancel your pre-paid order, the seller must mail your refund within seven business days of receiving your notice of cancellation. If you charged your purchase, the seller must adjust your account within one billing cycle.

When conducting business with any company or individual it is wise to check out the offer prior to paying any money. You can check out a business on the BCA website and also search for information on the internet using the business name, product, or offer and adding key words such as “complaints”, “reviews” or “scam” along with the information. (Ex. ABC Company complaints) Be cautious when making payments by money order, wire transfer, or cash to individuals or businesses you are not sure about or whom you do not know. Avoid offers that insist on wire transfers for payment. If possible, use your credit card or a secure online payment method as payment. By doing so you may be able to file a dispute and perhaps recover your money. Verify that there is a physical address and phone number to contact, should you have any questions or concerns. If it sounds too good to be true, or if you are unable to verify the offer, or company information, it is wise to continue looking elsewhere.
