Comments and Analysis

This company sends out direct mail solicitations advising the recipient they have been selected to receive a $100 rebate offer. The solicitation provides a toll free number and a confirmation number to give to collect on the offer. Consumers who call are told they are eligible to receive Wal-Mart or Target rebates between $100 and $500. As a condition they are required to provide a valid Master Card or Visa number. ~~The company's website www.cashrebatemall.com indicates that the company is actually offering cash back rebates on purchases made by consumer members using any of the 500 on line businesses participating in thier program. The company's address is a UPS mail box center. There is no physical address for the company on file.~~We urge caution when responding to unfamiliar companies asking for credit card or other personal information. Be suspicious if you have received a letter or a postcard saying you have won a prize or are otherwise eligible to receive money. Chances are that by responding to the offer by phone mail or email you will eventually be solicited by a salesperson using persuasive sales pitches scare tactics or exaggerated claims to deceive you and take your money. Just because you initiate the call does not mean the business is legitimate or that you should be any less cautious about buying or investing over the phone. ~~A con artist may try to get your credit card or checking account numbers using any one of these methods. Remember; do not give your credit card number or your checking account number over the phone unless you are familiar with the company and know it is reputable. A fraudulent telemarketer may put a charge against your credit card without your authorization. Or the telemarketer may do an automatic debit scam. ~~Regulation Z which implements the Fair Credit Billing Act and the Truth in Lending Act protects you against unauthorized purchases. To be fully protected report the problem to the credit card issuer preferably in writing. Include your name and account number and an explanation of why you believe the charge is incorrect. Include a copy of your billing statement with the questionable charge highlighted. Send your letter to the address designated by the creditor for handling billing errors or claims of unauthorized use. Do not send it in the same envelope with your payment. You must pay the portion of your bill that is not in dispute.~~
