This company sells duplicated DVD copies of televised Mexican soap operas, known as novelas. The BBB has not been able to determine whether or not the company has obtained permission to solicit copies of the novela from the original creator. We have determined that Mexico has similar copyright laws to that of the US.Copyright gives the owner exclusive rights to reproduce, adapt, publicly distribute, perform and display their work. Nonetheless, the law allows "fair use" of copyrighted material. Fair use permits, in certain circumstances, the use or copying of all or a portion of a copyrighted work without the permission of the owner. Copyrighted works may be used for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. However, when copies are made for commercial use or a for profit company, the copies may be considered pirated, or in violation of copyright infringements."Piracy" is a slang term for copyright infringement, the unlawful copying of the work of another, usually for the purpose of distribution and profit. In contrast to swashbuckling pirates of yore, modern day "pirates" make copies, sometimes perfect digital copies, of the work of another. Copyright holders are concerned with infringement because they believe that if someone can buy a copy of their work for less or obtain it for free, their profits will be lost. In our experience, pirated copies may be poor quality, or missing essential elements necessary to complete the work as a whole.
