Students affected by the closure of the school and who received a federal loan can apply to have their loan discharged. It is important that students keep in mind that if they want their student loan discharged, they will have to agree to forgo any credits they earned at the schools. Students should contact their loan servicer for details about the application process to get the loan discharged. To find who services your federal loan, login to the “My Federal Student Aid” website or call 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Only federal loans are eligible for the closed school loan discharge mentioned here. Options for private student loans should be discussed with the private loan lender.

Another option is to apply for reimbursement from a State Tuition Recovery Fund. Each state has their own information which can be accessed through the following links:

Students that believe they were defrauded by CCI and whose school closed may choose to apply for debt relief under “defense to repayment” or “borrower’s defense”, instead of a closed school loan discharge. Under the borrower’s defense claim, students must show that they were defrauded by their college under state law. Applicants can opt to have their loan go into forbearance (permission to stop payments) so they do not fall behind on payments or default on their loan before the claims are resolved. If the student is in default already, collection activity will be halted.
