Comments and Analysis

The Federal Trade Commission's Mail Order Rule allows the seller 30 days to ship ordered products to the buyer unless otherwise specified at the time of purchase. If the seller cannot ship within the 30 day period, they are required to notify the buyer in writing of the delay, and give the option of waiting, or having their money returned within 7 days. Credit card payments must be credited within one billing cycle. By law, consumers generally have from 60 to 120 days from the billing date to dispute the charge with the credit card company. After the 60 day period, a charge cannot be reversed unless the seller consents. If the order is cancelled, we suggest that the product be returned in sufficient time to permit a credit card dispute to be filed.
