In California, this industry is largely unregulated by State authorities, meaning they are not required to register, or obtain a specialty license to operate. Our experience with similar offers has been that in some cases, processing fees associated with debt management services are an added expense for the debt-ridden consumer, creditors will not always agree to work with the debt adjustment company, and in some extreme cases money allocated to pay debts are retained by the debt adjustment company and not applied to debts as agreed. In these cases, consumers are usually advised that some provision in their written agreement enables the company to retain their payments. Remember, debt management companies are in business to make a profit. If you find your personal debtload unmanageable, and you are no longer able to make payments on all you owe, communmicate with your creditors. Ignoring them can result in your credit rating being adversely affected. Some companies will offer you an extension of 30 to 60 days if your shortage is temporary. You may be able to rewrite loans at a lower monthly payment amount for a longer re-payment term. Some debts may be covered by credit insurance policies which are sometimes added in on loan contracts or service agreements and forgotten about by the buyer.
