The California Immigration Consultants Act (CICA) was enacted to protect protect consumers from fraudulent promotors. It requires consultants to be licensed and bonded, and prohibits deceptive sales and operational practices. In California, laws prohibit paralegals, notaries public, accredited representatives, and immigration consultants, from providing legal advice to clients. A consulting service can only provide non-legal services, such as; filling out forms; assistance with obtaining supporting documents; or providing translation services. Only an attorney can provide legal advice. Decide what help you need and compare the prices of consultineg services and lawyers. An immigration consultant may cost as much as an attorney, but their services offered, may be limited. Read and understand all contract provisions. Do not sign anything you do not understand. Your contract should be provided in your native language as well as english. Make sure your contract clearly states all services to be performed, and how much you must pay. State law allows three days to cancel your contract without penalty or obligation for a full refund. Cancellations should be submitted in writing.
