Comments and Analysis

Storm-chasing contractors disappear after doing inferior work or no work at all. To avoid becoming involved with a storm chaser, BCA offers the following tips:

• Do your due diligence and thoroughly research the business. Ask for company contact information and verify it. Home Improvement Contractors are licensed in most states, so ask for the company's license number, credentials or permits. Conduct a Google search of the company name and see if your search directs you to any complaints or reviews posted online. It is safest to hire local companies that have a recognizable name and history in your community.
• Avoid contractors that ask for a large down payment or ask you to sign over your insurance check. Never pay all at once, and use a credit card if possible in case you have to dispute the charges in the future.
• Demand a written contract that details everything promised by the contractor. The contract should specify the work to be done, the costs, and when the project will start and be completed.
• Cancellation rights vary state to state. The contractor should give you written notice of these rights.

If you have additional questions or concerns, contact BCA. One of our experienced and knowledgeable customer service representatives can be reached at (909) 825-0490.

Other Considerations

Business Consumer Alliance urges consumers to use caution when contacted by contractors shortly after a storm has devastated your community. These Storm-chasing contractors visit consumers at their homes and claim they can complete the repair work immediately. They will ask for a large down payment and sometimes advise unsuspecting consumers to sign over their insurance checks. Unfortunately, for the homeowners, the storm chasers disappear after doing inferior work or no work at all. Hiring a legitimate contractor is essential because your insurance company has to be able to connect the damages to your home to the storm.
