Adults interested in obtaining a GED or High School Equivalency Certificate should always do their homework before paying any company. Be cautious. There are multiple online schools and programs that promise GED certificates and HSEC for high fees but in reality they are selling nothing more than a useless piece of paper.

Diploma mills are an old dilemma and they are crafty in how they advertise. Remember if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Some tell tale signs of a diploma mill are:

• They are not accredited or they are accredited by a fake or unrecognized agency.~
• They promise a diploma or degree in less than 30 days.~
• Little to no work required to obtain a diploma/degree or credits for “life experience”.~
• They charge a lump sum or flat fee for the degree/diploma.~
• They do not have a physical address or location listed on their website.~
• High pressure to enroll and pay.

While this is not an all inclusive list of red flags to tip you off to a degree/diploma mill any of these signs should give reason for cause. Official GED tests are not given by mail or online. The official test must be done at am approved facility. Be aware that GED or equivalent diplomas issued by third-party organization may or may not be recognized by potential employers education institutions or branches of the military. To find out if a particular high school or online program is recognized or accredited by your state contact your state's Department of Education.
