Comments and Analysis

This firm is an independent copyright licensing service. It is authorized by major Hollywood motion picture studios to grant a blanket, or umbrella, license for the public performance rights of copyrighted motion pictures. This license allows certain non theatrical movie exhibitors, such as educational and penal institutions, hospitals, lodging establishments and other organizations to provide movie entertainment to employees, members or residents. This eliminates the need for such exhibitors to obtain licenses to show movies from copyright holders and to obtain prints or video tapes from licensors. This organization submitted its plans to offer this license to the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice determined, in December 1986, the proposed blanket license posed no significant antitrust concerns, and may offer substanial benefits and efficiencies in film distribution.
