I have a family heirloom stone that I wanted to make into a ring. Through a recommendation in the building at the jeweler's address, 55 W. 47th Street, #515, I was promised that a shank would be added to the already banded stone. I paid $250 in cash and the jeweler gave me his business card with the amount paid and his signature. This was around July 10th, 2021 but I don't have the exact date because it's not on the card. When I returned to pick up the ring, he had burned two holes in the stone's backing and one corner of the shank was not attached to the stone. He promised he would cover the holes with another piece of "gold" and I should return after his vacation. I went back 3 weeks later and the stone was completely destroyed: 3 cracks and 3 gouges, and it had a milky surface that obscured the stone's properties. I can't wear it because the cracks make it too fragile. This jeweler refuses to give me back the entire $250 and says he will only give me "$100 or $150" because of the materials he used in making the ring. I believe that since he destroyed the piece, the materials he used are irrelevant. I also feel that I'm not obligated to pay him for his labor since the work is so bad. I'd like to send photos but there is no place to do that on this form. Resolution Sought A complete refund.
