EPM Iowa, LLC complaints

I applied for an apartment in independence Iowa through EPM Iowa LLC. I have two children and I am going through. I looked at the apartment on my own and told them I would take it. They sent me paperwork but they wanted a deposit and first months rent. I did pay that and after that I got no other paperwork until it was time to move in. I did receive the lease after I was already supposed to be in the apartment. When I went to look at the apartment again before I moved in there was several apartments that had sheriffs papers on the doors. I was also told there's a lot of drug activity as well as bedbugs. I expressed my concerns to the landlord and said I absolutely do not want my children in the apartment and asked if they had any others available they did have one other one in a different town. I went and looked at it was in Oelwein Iowa . I did tell them that that one would be OK for now because it's only one bedroom. I've been waiting for more paperwork and one of them to use the deposit from the previous apartment for this one. Apparently there was some issues with my payment which I have talk to the bank about. But in order to get in there I had to pay them another first months rent. I heard nothing more about the other apartment as far as getting my payment from that. Since I have paid it they told me I could move in they sent me of the lease which I filled out. The day before we were to move in my boyfriend got several messages from the upstairs tenant. Resolution Sought I would like to be free and clear of this company they have kept the first months rent they told me to leave the keys on the counter I did I never moved in now they're saying I owe until someone else moves in. I I am contacting a lawyer to see my options as well.

I feel this place was not safe for my children I was not told about the tenant upstairs being violent with the last tenant. I expressed my concerns they said I signed the lease and had to give 30 day notice which I did.
