I needed to rent a backhoe to install a driveway on my property. I call a few different companies before deciding to rent from Herc Rentals. I called to make a reservation in which I told them in detail about my intentions and needs. I was reassured that they had a machine that could dig out stumps and that they could have it delivered to my address on the dates I needed. I reserved the equipment for a week and was told to purchase insurance through them that would cover anything that was beyond my control, which was stated to be rollover, theft if left in an unlock or un gated property, fire, or floods. I felt like I had been well informed and made the decision to go ahead with the rental purchase. When the machine arrived I had 40 hours run time or 7 days, which ever came first. I spent a day putting in culvert pipes, after I finished the pipe installation i began to digging out stumps that my skid steer couldn't handle, again this was the whole reason for the rental to begin with. Everything was going great until a hydraulic line started leaking, I shut off the machine and called Herc rentals to inform them of this problem. I was reassured that they would be out next day to have the machine repaired and that I had insurance that would cover the cost of repairs. They machine was working next day and I begin working on digging out stumps when the fan belt separated. Two days later it was fixed, by this time I didn't have time to finish my hours and I had to pay for repairs. Resolution Sought I made my decision based on what I was told by the branch manager only to be informed that I was never cover by insurance because I was digging out stumps and that because of this nothing will be cover if the machine has a problem. They tried to offer me another week to make up for the down time but would still have to pay an additional 1,500.00+ dollars to cover repairs. If the motor had blown up on this machine m, I would have been responsible, but was never informed of this prior. Full refund
