Customer Complaint

North Star Mutual Insurance Co. used unscrupulous methods to resist paying out my claim. I suffered a loss of nearly $30,000 by theft. My policy covers full replacement. On May 5th, 2020, I asked NSMIC to give me an update and a check covering the amount lost. Instead of paying me a portion of the claim, and later resolving disputed amounts , Northstar sued me on 3.10.2021 for declaratory relief to prevent me from suing them for breach of contract. Northstar claimed that multiple deductibles apply to the losses and that I did not file my Proof of Loss on time. Northstar also claimed that I was guilty of misrepresentation and fraud when I argued that it was inappropriate to assign numerous deductibles and thefts. I am legally blind and they refused to make documents available to me in a readable format (MSword), so I was not properly informed of deadlines and did not have access to the policy's instructions. In order to collect my claimg I've also hired an attorney, an assistant to read important documents to me and a public adjuster, which altogether has set me back nearly $10,000. All in all, my experience with North Star has been fraught with barriers to information, and marked by a set of cynical strategies that the Northstar used to dissuade me from collecting my claim. Resolution Sought Pay out my claim 27,000 minus a reasonable deductible. Pay my attorney expenses, public adjuster portion and pay for the disability access that I had to cover, when they could have just sent me a msword copy of the policy. I'd like them to come up with a plan to make their adjusters act in good faith.
