Dealing with SunLife has been one of the most exhausting, stressful, and disheartening experiences I've ever had while trying to access short-term disability benefits during one of the hardest times in my life. For over a month, I have been stuck in endless paperwork, miscommunication, and a complete lack of support from my assigned case examiner. From the beginning, I was given little to no information about what was needed for my claim, and was repeatedly left to figure out important details myself. My examiner never clearly outlined timelines, amounts, or expectations. Instead, I found myself shuffling documents between SunLife and my therapist, with almost zero guidance. Adding to the frustration, my case examiner failed to even mention that she would be out of the office until days after I had been waiting on urgent updates. I was also only provided the direct deposit form after weeks of delay — something that should have been provided at the beginning of the process to avoid additional hold-ups. Meanwhile, I've been unable to even have proper therapy sessions to help my mental health, because organizations like BetterHelp (how ironic, given the name) don't operate like a traditional therapist's office when it comes to disability paperwork — and I was left scrambling to get everything SunLife needed with no real assistance. After all of that effort, I was still left completely in the dark about when my payments were supposed to be processed.
