I am a young mother of 3 children, and my husband is a veteran. This company manages Veterans Village in Loma Linda, CA. A supposedly low- income apartment complex for veterans and their families. We applied while we were living in North Carolina, once we were selected off of the waiting list I relocated to CA with my young children while my husband stayed back in NC and continued working his full time job. We went through 2 eligibility processes for these apartments, anytime we were asked for documents I provided them the same day. My family was split from coast to coast, but the project manager Katia reassured me that I needed to be here in California to better my chances of moving in when we were accepted. As I was signing documents, I noticed the paper with the grounds for denial and one of the reasons was bankruptcy. Something that was not mentioned once to me verbally or on paper as I recall. I individually filed in 2021, so I immediately knew it could be an issue. We were told that it was the first time they have seen a bankruptcy, so it was escalated to the Regional Manager. Who later decided that they would not work with us due to the BK. I requested the detailed credit report and I saw we met all the requirements to live there otherwise. Now my family and I are scrambling to find affordable housing last minute here in California. We have exhausted most, if not all avenues especially for veterans. I have requested that the Regional Manager contact me, but no response Resolution Sought Re-train your property managers to be more empathetic towards others, work on communication skills, do not string along veterans and their families in the application process. There is a lot riding on the decisions that your company makes, please realize that behind every application is a human being.
