I hired JC Law Firm to handle my custody case after my original attorney left the firm. I had already paid approximately $6,500 in legal fees before the transition. When my case was reassigned to a new lawyer at JC Law, I was charged again for the same information and work I had already paid for with the first attorney. Throughout the case, there were several continuances, including one caused by the Guardian Ad Litem's illness and another because my lawyer himself was sick—which I only found out when I appeared in court. Despite these delays being out of my control, I was billed for them, and my balance continued to increase. As of now, I have paid around $6,500, yet the firm claims I still owe nearly $12,000. My balance jumped to over $7,000 after my attorney failed to appear in court, and then I was charged another $5,000 shortly after. The firm is now threatening to withdraw as counsel unless I make further payments, which feels like a power move to pressure me financially. In the beginning, I also had difficulty obtaining a signed contract or clear breakdown of fees. I was essentially stuck without the option to switch counsel due to timing and urgency of my custody matter. This experience has caused me significant financial and emotional stress, and I believe these billing practices are unfair, excessive, and unethical. I am requesting that the BBB investigate JC Law Firm's conduct, help mediate this dispute, and ensure they are held accountable for Resolution Sought Help me with my case which was the original plan or just give me my funds back. They made this a completely horrible experience. I'm just for words.

I initially payed 3500 for my brother to be represented in federal court in Washington D.C. By JC Law(the above mentioned law firm). At the time I retain JC Law(Nov 20, 2023) they did not have an attorney to cover that area in DC(Federal court in Washington D.C.) Zachery Groves and Mark Sobel omitted that fact and took my money(3500.00) on Nov 20th 2023. Russell Hairston( the lawyer sent to see my brother) left JC law on Nov 17th, however, JC law contacted him to go see my brother the week after Thanksgiving. According to Mark Sobel, JC law doesn't have any other lawyer that can represent my brother in federal court DC-- So I asked for a refund and Mark Sobel would not refund my full 3500 on account of Russell Hairston going to visit my brother. He charged me the $1000.00 visit fee Mark Sobel said that Russell Hairston wasn't as familiar with Federal DC court, I spoke with Russell Hairston and he says he does know. Mark Sobel sent an email telling me he didn't know that there was a firearm involved(a lie), that I told him (Mark Sobel), that my brother was in superior court not in Federal court (lie), also in his email he made it seem like I have a problem with Hairston advice, when at the time he suggested Russell Hairston didn't know as much about Federal court in DC, which Russell Hairston denies and that Hairston was leaving JC law when in fact, Russell Hairston had already left JC law on Nov 17th. As of now, JC Law hasn't returned any of money. Resolution Sought To get a full refund. They said the would only refund 2500. I deposited 3500. The visitation fee was for a lawyer to represent my brother, they don't have a lawyer that covers federal court DC law and the one they chose left after I paid them.

We were retained by the brother, Clintonr on behalf of Clarencer for a $3500 flat for a DC criminal case. We were told at the initial consultation that this was a misdemeanor drug case in Superior Court. Clinton was told that there would be an additional retainer if there were felony charges. Upon research into the case, it was determined that it was a firearm and felony drug case in the federal District Court. At that time, Russell H. had recently left the office. I spoke with Clintonr, and I offered to either refund him the $3500 or we can have Russell do a jail visit with the client for $1000. He notified me to have Russell visit with his brother for the $1000. Russell went ahead and visited the client in the DC jail. I then called Clinton and notified him that a case in federal court starts at $15,000 but did not give him a firm quote. He was upset that Russell told his brother $20,000. I spoke with Clinton, and we agreed that we earned $1000 and will refund the remaining $2500. He agreed to the same in writing. We then issued a refund of $2500. The $1000 was split between russell and our office.
