Late in July 2023, we used Thumbtack online services to find a verified, reliable, professional contractor for a home renovation project in our area. Thumbtack gave us several leads for professional contractors to initiate contact, and we interviewed several and received their estimates for the project. We hired Mr. F—a contractor advertised as a verified "Pro" in the Thumbtack platform service. In our interview with Mr. F, we explained our situation as newcomers to North Carolina and first-time homeowners. After giving us his estimate, he assured us he would take care of all the details, such as permit requests, drawing plans, purchasing materials, and carrying out the project to completion; he demanded half of the project costs to start up. We paid the contractor $ 6,500 upfront on August 2023, expecting him to start working immediately. He showed up with some materials that he delivered to our garage, and then he left, never to return to complete the project, and failed to refund our money. We exhausted every legal resource, including taking him to a small court. However, the case was dismissed due to a lack of address to serve the summons. All the Pro" info Thumbtack gave us for this individual was fictitious. He disappeared with our funds. In October 2023, we agreed to Thumbtack's mediation process with Mr. F. As a result, we were adjudicated $5,000 - the total amount of the money we paid. Unfortunately, the mediation is unenforceable due to lack of business address. Resolution Sought Repay all the costs incurred due to their negligence and false marketing advertising. Honoring their advertised guarantee for a full money-back refund if any problem or bad job for the contractor results in damages.
