About Santa Monica Pet Med Center, Inc

In 1964, Dr. Marilyn Twitchell opened the doors of Santa Monica Pet Medical Center, one of the first female veterinarians to own and operate a hospital in California. Dr. Twitchell operated the practice for 10 years and passed it on to Dr. Walter Holtan in 1973. Dr. Holtan grew the practice from a busy one doctor practice to a busy three doctor practice with the help of his wife, Dr. Patricia Hayes. In 2006, Dr. Holtan hired his daughter Kirstin manage the practice so he could partially retire. Kirstin and her husband Mark bought the practice in 2011 and undertook a major facility remodeling and upgrade. SMPMC or “Pet Medical” to many long time clients, is today, a state-of-the-art full-service hospital in all respects with five full-time doctors, an experienced long-term support staff and sincere dedication to quality pet healthcare. Our motto is “Where Experience Matters” and it comes from our investment in our people, training and equipment. Our practice is dominated by senior staff and doctors that have been with us for 10, 15 even 20 years, and we constantly invest in our team to ensure that are the best at what they do. Our doctors have an average of 22 years of experience as DVM’s.
