Why!?!? Why make this my fault- this should've been simple but has now inconvenienced my family to the extreme

Returned home and noticed a bag missing that included vial items required for my 2 kids 2 return to school tomorrow morning. We live an hour away and as it's 8 at night returning isn't a question. Calling they said they had it n refused a refund, clearly I now have to buy it somewhere else. My entire family is now stressed to hell- I have to now go to town after that long car ride for thermometers, hand wipes, sanitizer ect or my kids don't go to school, upon talking to manager I had to send a pic of receipt and he needed to review cam footage even though girl at office said they had it! Like I was lying. He called back saying I would only be refunded when I drove all the way back which is not convenient but at least I can get my money for what I paid for but he tried blaming me for not taking my bag as I had grabbed others but between swiping card dealing w my kid n her handing receipt n pushing me on I didn't realize it was my job/ I thought cashiers were to bag n give you your purchased items? Am I wrong but I am extremely unhappy on top of my children freaking out on me cause they don't have the required items to return to school that I already thought I bought n can't as I've dealer w this for past hour. Had cashier even remotely been dec I prob would brushed it off but while checking out my daughter complained about her fake fingernails were locked n needed an associate, my husband took her to find someone. She just rolled her eyes at me, also I got receipt -1bag
