Caution – Fraudulent & Deceptive Business Practices!

Eagle Moving Group Inc. misrepresented themselves and their "services", violating the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act & Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act . (1.) They conducted a bait-and-switch operation by intentionally providing us with a low-ball estimate and falsely claiming that it would be accurate within a margin of 5%—unless we added or removed any items. We paid a large deposit based on their false information and "errors", which were only revealed to us after the non-refundable deposit was paid. Despite REMOVING all of their personal packing services and materials, over half of the total box count, and several large furniture items from the initial quote… Eagle Moving Group Inc. somehow INCREASED our charges by over 55%. Then, we were notified that the final increased payment had to be made in advance by cash or money order (forms of payment that can't be cancelled or disputed) otherwise they would not deliver our belongings. (2.) They claimed to be a full-service moving company, assuring us that the same crew who disassembled and picked up our belongings would drive, unload, and reassemble them upon delivery. However, without our knowledge or consent, they: • Hired a separate carrier (Relo Van Lines) to pick up our belongings and transport them to a warehouse in another state. • Left our belongings in an undisclosed warehouse for an unspecified amount of time, delaying our promised delivery date with no indication of when it would be completed. • Employed a different carrier (Moving Forward Group) to transport our belongings from the warehouse to our new home. • The final driver then contacted local individuals—not fully employed by the company—to unload our belongings. (3.) Finally, our belongings were severely damaged during the move (all documented with pictures and videos), and everything smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. Our furniture was left in pieces and in some cases completely upside down, with nothing reassembled as promised. Our boxes were already opened and dumped out BEFORE being delivered with individual items carried separately and in different containers. Additionally, our new home's walls, doors, door frames, and hallways were severely scraped, dented, and chipped. We spent hours making numerous calls, sending emails, and writing letters to try and fairly resolve our situation, but they only offered us a refund of a few hundred dollars (with an NDA attached) when the fraudulent charges and damage to our property cost several thousand dollars. We were able to dispute only a small portion of partial payment which was made by credit card. We tried to initiate their neutral arbitration process (as promoted on their own website and required for interstate movers according to federal law [Section 49 U.S.C. Section 375.211]), but after many attempts and pushback we were eventually informed that Eagle Moving Group Inc. DOES NOT have an arbitration program of any kind.

Comments and Analysis

We suggest that consumers insist on a written binding estimate in advance of the move. With a binding estimate, the actual moving costs may not exceed the estimate. Be certain that the estimate is very specific concerning the goods to be shipped. It is advisable to purchase additional valuation for lost or damaged goods since the statuatory liability is only .60 cents per pound. If you obtain a non-binding estimate and you are moving between states (interstate) and the final invoice exceeds the estimated amount, customers are required to pay only 10% over the original estimate when the goods are delivered, with a balance due in 30 days. You can file a complaint or verify licensing by writing to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration located at 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20590, or calling (800) 832-5660 or visiting their website at www.safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
