Be Careful!

I had an extremely disappointing experience with this moving company while relocating my family. The movers arrived 3 hours late with an understaffed and inexperienced crew. After 2 hours, they had only completed a quarter of the work. The movers damaged the wall in my townhome by trying to move a wooden dresser without removing the drawers first. They also got stuck in the stairwell for over an hour trying to navigate the curved stairs. I was contacted by Ms. Brooks, who was not on site, for a status update. She said she was sending additional movers, which should have been allocated from the beginning given the size of the job. Once the new movers arrived, they wasted time rearranging the truck. At this point, over 3 hours into the move, I started helping by moving furniture downstairs to speed things up. As I was inside, I couldn't see how the truck was loaded. I was told it was fully packed so I locked up the truck. Upon arriving at our destination, I discovered the movers had damaged my antique dining table by placing a large sectional on top of it, breaking the base. There was also damage to a column, my jewelry box, my china cabinet, lamps, vases, and the base of my foyer table. When I contacted Ms. Brooks, she shockingly suggested I file a fraudulent claim with a different company to get more money. I declined this unethical proposal. Communication after that was lacking. I was told I would get a form to file a complaint but never received one. Ms. Brooks insisted the table base could be repaired, but reputable companies I contacted said that was not possible due to its age and extent of damage. I never received any repair recommendations from her. This was the worst moving experience I've ever had. The company lacks formal processes for scheduling, protection of belongings, and managing complaints. I strongly advise avoiding this company, as they do a disservice to the moving industry and consumers. Respectfully, Dr. Lewis- unsatisfied customer

Comments and Analysis

We suggest that consumers insist on a written binding estimate in advance of the move. With a binding estimate, the actual moving costs may not exceed the estimate. Be certain that the estimate is very specific concerning the goods to be shipped. It is advisable to purchase additional valuation for lost or damaged goods since the statuatory liability is only .60 cents per pound. If you obtain a non-binding estimate and you are moving between states (interstate) and the final invoice exceeds the estimated amount, customers are required to pay only 10% over the original estimate when the goods are delivered, with a balance due in 30 days. You can file a complaint or verify licensing by writing to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration located at 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20590, or calling (800) 832-5660 or visiting their website at www.safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
