BCA's Summary and Analysis:

Some complainants allege that seminars or workshops they attended was of poor quality, and did not provide sufficient training. Students claim that text materials were mostly taken from internet information which they could have obtained for free. Other customers complain they pre-paid for the seminar, then cancelled, but failed to receive a refund. Those who attended the seminar complain that the teacher was unprofessional, there were too many students for only one teacher, the facilities lacked proper lighting and sound systems, and that much of the time was spent talking about personal unrelated matters. A few complainants allege they conducted seminars on behalf of the company, but failed to receive compensation and reimbursement for expenses as agreed.

The company responded to one complainant by issuing a refund.

Comments and Analysis

This company holds seminars nationally claiming to provide workshops on grant writing. Seminmars are held at local college campuses, hotels or other temporary locations. We advise careful consideration if you are considering paying for a grant workshop. Our experience has been that companies holding these seminars do not have any direct ties with the government, but rather, are third parties attempting to capitalize on information that can be obtained for free from government agencies or websites. For example, The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), diseminates information upon request and via their website, on grants and loans entitled, " The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. You can obtain the information for free by calling the DHHS local office, or visit their website at www.aspe.os.dhhs.gov. Government grants are not designed to provide a means for you to pay your bills or have extra spending money. Generally, obtaining a grant is a complicated process requiring documentation and research, and are primarily for education, research, and business purposes. Although foundations may exist whose requirements are based on personal preference, the vast majority requires applicants to meet very specific guidelines they have established to even qualify.

Other Considerations

Before agreeing to, or paying fees for, training offered at seminars, insist that the seller provide full written details of the offer, cancellations policies, and the contract. Obtain written confirmation of all verbal promises and any unclear issues. Check registration or exemption from such requirement with the California Private Post Secondary Educational Council: (916) 445-3427.
