BCA's Summary and Analysis:

Complainants allege dissatisfaction with the company's marketing practices. Potential customers complain the company fails to disclose the offer for the free computer is conditional. In order to receive the *free computer, recipients must sign a three year contract agreeing to pay $24.99 per month for internet services. Complainants contend they are unaware of the stipulation in question, and are not advised until after the presentation when they receive a merchandise voucher instead of a computer. The company responds to complaints by disputing allegations and claiming customers must have failed to read the information provided to them in association with the offers. One customer received an offer to select from other awards offered. Two complaints are closed as disputed. Customers are not always satisfied with the company's responses. *The word free may be used in advertising when ever the advertiser is offering an unconditional gift. If receipt of the free merchandise is conditional, the advertiser must disclose this condition clearly and conspicuously together with the free offer, (not by placing an asterick or symbol next to "free," and referring to a footnote.) An asterick may be used to impart additional information, prominently disclosed, and NOT as a means of contradicting or substantially changing the meaning of any advertising statement.
