My Experience
In January I met with a local mortgage broker in hopes that my wife and I could qualify for an FHA loan and take advantage of the current housing market and rates. Unfortunately as I suspected I had many credit issues prevented my broker from getting us approved. I was very disappointed to say the least. He suggested that I allow a company called American Credit to conduct a free assessment of my credit and would be able to offer me some guidance in return. I felt like I had nothing to lose and accepted the opportunity to have them take a look. I have to say that when I received my credit assessment via email I was very impressed with how many notes they took and how easy it was to read their suggestions. I had a great conversation with a credit specialist who made it easy for me to understand the process and how to read my credit report. They helped me see how important credit cards were and how to use them each month. To make a long story short, American Credit was amazing the whole way through! They helped me get 2 credit cards, gave me great updates and customer service and in a little over 4 months my middle credit score when from a 576 to a 662!! I was able to get approved for an FHA loan and my wife and i literally just moved into our new home 3 days ago! I hope my experience helps someone else who may be in a pinch with their credit looking for a good place to go to for help.

BCA's Summary and Analysis:
Complainants allege misrepresentation of services unfulfilled contracts and inability to obtain refunds. Some customers report they were verbally told that bankruptcies would be removed or that credit scores would be raised to a specific number score. These customers report that bankruptcies are not removed and credit scores are minimally improved as a result of using the service. Most complainants requested refunds.~~The company responds to some complaints by disputing allegations that verbal promises to remove bankruptcies or raise credit scores were made and advise complainants that their written agreement specifically states otherwise. In some cases a minimal refund amount of $25 was offered along with an explanation that refund amounts are determined by subtracting a $225 processing fee and $150 for each item removed. One or more complaints are unresolved meaning the company failed to properly address the complaint allegations or their response was inadequate.

Our experience with similar offers is that they advertise various credit services which they claim are designed to provide assistance to consumers with poor credit histories to improve their rating by removing negative items or creating a new credit file.~~However clients of these types of offers generally complain that their credit histories do not improve that they are unable to contact the company making the offer and ultimately that refunds for failing to provide the promised services are not provided.~~By law information stays on your credit report for seven to 10 years. Accurate negative information can only be removed by with cooperation of your creditors and this usually involves paying all or some of the debt. If you believe your credit report contains erroneous information you may dispute the entry by calling or writing the the credit reporting agency. While in dispute the negative item may be removed temporarily from your report however it will be added on again if determined to be valid.~ ~According to California Law it is unlawful for any entity offering to improve or repair your credit to charge fees in advance of performing those services even if properly registred and bonded with the California Attorney General's Office.
